How do you reset the check engine light on 98 discovery?

Thanks,

The light is a result of a stored fault code. You have to have a OBDII compliant scanner to clear engine management related codes. Some large auto parts stores have a scanner and will clear the code for free, or for a nominal charge. Examples are Autozone, Pep Boys, etc.

However-- make sure that the CEL issue is addressed first. If it was a "multiple misfire" code, for instance --- find the root cause (wires, coil pack, evaporative system leak, Mass flow meter, etc.)

You cannot get through an emission test with a CEL on. And if it is related to your O2 sensors not operating properly, you will burn more fuel until you rectify the problem.

Please consider us for the needed parts when you get to the bottom of the problem.

My 01 discovery has a sloshing sound in the dash board. It runs find, does not over heat and is not leaking.

KimberStep,

The Check engine light (CEL) can be due to a number of things. How many miles on the vehicle?. If over 90K the CEL can come on because the engine is misfiring on occasion because of spark plugs or spark plug wires that need replacing. Other causes for a CEL are O2 sensors, catalytic convertors, a failing MAF (Mass flow sensor), etc.

The SRS (safety restraint system) light can illuminate when a sensor in the seat belt is failing (normally the drivers seat belt because it gets the most use). However--that is only one cause.

Unfortunately ---these vehicles have sophisticated electronics that store body-electric fault codes in the on-board computer that can only be read with a certain type of scanner normally found in only Dealers or well-equipped independent Land Rover repair shops.

The engine related codes (such as your CEL) can be read with what is called a OBDII compliant scanner, which many auto parts stores have on-site. They will plug into your Land Rover and read the codes for free (or for a nominal charge). This --at least--- will reveal the codes that have caused your CEL to illuminate.

If you can get those codes and send me the info, I can give you some advice on what parts you need. I have all of them in stock here.

Thanks for your inquiry and Happy Thanksgiving,

Geoman

How many miles do you have on the vehicle?. It sounds like you are not getting fuel enrichment when the engine is cold. However-- with that said, it is only when a engine is first started in the morning that a richer mixture is needed for the first few minutes of running. Do you have a check engine light on?

Hi I've got a 99 Disco 2 with 88k on the clock, engine check light started coming on about six months ago with "Driver Demand" fault stored on the system. Replaced the injector harness and the throttle pedal assembly, all seemed fine untill last week when it started again.

At my wits end, runs fine for six months then drops out every couple of days, switching off then on again clears the fault, still reads "driver demand" on the Autologic box

Any ideas?

My 97' Discovery (68,000 miles) check engine light has been on awhile. New smog was due 4-30-08. Service 2 yrs ago included new plugs and wire set and fuel injection flush. Passed smog after that. Only put 7,000 miles on LR in 2 years and engine light has been on a few months after last smog test. It runs fine to me. Landrover in SF invoice read P0300, P305 & P1314 readings, recommending spark plug replacement. Light was cleared and went off the next day. They recommend $2,500. valve job, that I cannot afford. HELP - I need to pass my smog as I have not been able to drive it with no updated smog and cannot get smogged with check engine light on. Any suggestions!

You need to have an OBDII scanner to read and clear codes. If you don't have one you might want to look into getting one they are less than $200 for a good one.

Angello, the shop who changed the plugs, etc.. only works on Land Rovers so I will assume he had the correct scanner that you listed on your post. With only 68,000 miles, do you think it would need a $2,500 valve job or could it be something less expensive to fix or troubleshoot?

you need to get OBDII scanner and clear the codes that way or look up the proceedure for clearing them manually. There's a way to clear them manually but I can't remember how since I bought my generic scanner for 56 bucks. Go get one it will pay for itself in one usage. They work for any 96 and up vehicle that is OBDII compliant. Have a good day.
