1996 Range Rover code P1316-P0300

I have a 1996 RR 4.0 107,000 miles for six months. Replaced o2 sensors, mass air flow, plugs and wires. Code P1316 comes up on my OBD II X Ray computer. Intially shows P0300 then changes quickly to P1316. I checked the engine bay at night for arcking, none. At idle engine does run a little uneven. Before replacing the above parts bank 1 side 2 ran lean. I do have a slap when engine is cold, sounds to be in valve train. Coolant does drop on longer trips, a quart sometimes a little more. Am I looking at engine and a coil replacement? How do I check the coil pack?
Thank you for your help

That P0300 is a multiple/random cylinder misfire detected--code. There is a possibility that you have one or more sticking intake valves, so the first thing I would do is add a full quart of Magic Marvel Mystery Oil to the crankcase AFTER performing a oil and filter change (only add 5.5 quarts of oil to allow for the one quart of Magic Marvel). Then drive the vehicle for about a week and change the oil again. This time add a quart of Rislone. Then drive it for the normal interval between oil changes. You are trying to remove the gummy deposits on the piston rings and valve guides by going through this procedure. As far as checking the coil pack, there is really no known procedure. They do fail and usually throw a misfire code but the misfire is usually consistent. The loss of coolant is a concern. Have the vehicle pressure tested through the cooling system expansion tank filler neck-- at 10 psi. Inspect the seam of the expansion tank for seepage. Inspect the cylinder head gaskets for seepage by peering under the exhaust manifolds from underneath the vehicle with a flashlight. Head gaskets are a typical failure item on Land Rovers that can lead to engine meltdown if not addressed. The replacement typically runs about $1600 (parts and labor)---but if you are mechanically inclined you can do the job. I have the kits for less than $200 that include all of the head bolts.

I have a problem, my truck is a 1996 Range Rover S.E. with 150,000 Miles. Engien apears to run just fine, but lately, I hear a clicking noise liek a clock, I am told it is my valves, this noise comes and goes, really not consistant, it happens especialy when its cold. How can I get rid of the noise ? In addition I have had a slow oil leak for the past few years, besides this, no other problems, just the noise.. Any assistance would be appriciated.

See my information under the FAQ section that relates to exhaust leaks. It sounds like you have a Y-pipe flange gasket leaking.

The 1316 code is related to the crankshaft sensor. My guess is that one/some of the teeth on the reluctor ring are bent or just out of range causing crank sensor pattern to be out of range. If you have had a rear main seal or transmission work done before and then this problem started I would bet the teeth are bent. You can e mail me at angelo@redroversuv.com if you need more info.

I have a 96 Disco 4.0 and it turns over but will not fire. I get no spark from any spark plug wire. What are the components to check?

Sounds like a crank speed sensor. It could be alarm related also. Are there any fault codes in the engine, abs, trans or alarm control units? How close are you to Martinez CA 94553? you can e mail me at angelo@redroversuv.com or bring it in to get it looked at if you live in the bay area. Merry Christmas

I have a 1996 Range Rover SE,
My engine makes a loud flappy/ticking noise. It occurs usually in extreme cold temperatures. I have had this problem before, and the dealership said it was my valves, and not sure what they did, but the problem went away for a while and now its back again. How can I fix this for good.

How long was it fixed and what did they do? Let me know if you can. When does it make the most noise and how long does it make it?

This was done almost 4 months ago, they fixed a few things so they claim, the major thing the fixed was my oil leaks, they removed transmission, replaced all the following: the seals,Camshaft, Timing Chain, Bearing,Crank Shaft Seal, ignition wire set, intake gasket. Exhaust flang, valve stem seal etc. To address the flapping, ticking noise i believe they did something to the valve, and lifters...

The noise comes ang goes, however when it come it really sounds horrible, especially when I come to a stop, idle, the ticking noise, and sometimes if I turn off the ignition and turn it back on again, again it goes away, and sometimes when I start the car up in the morning, the ticking noise comes on, then after driving for a while it sometimes gets louder, and sometime it goes away.. But the most consistence times i hear this noise is usually on a very cold day/morning.. I bought my truck new, in 1996, I have maintained it, I know everything about it.. other than this problem, it runs almost perfect with no other major issues..This noise is very annoying and makes my truck sound very old.. I have complained to the dealership, and they initially said it was maybe one of the valves sticking, I have not had the time to take it back yet, but I wanted to confirm what could be causing it...

Without hearing the noise it is hard for me to say what it is. Usually mechanical problems don't come and go, either something is broke or it isn't. It is possible a weak valve spring(I think this would stay noisy all the time) or sticking valve on the #4 cylinder since you have a P0304 code. The #4 misfire could be from a reluctor tooth hitting crank speed sensor. I would need to hear the noise to give a better opinion. Good luck.

I figured out what the noise is, "sticky valves" i am told it is my valves. Any idears how to resolve this without the very expensive valve job ?

You can try to run fuel injector cleaner through the fueling system and hope it cleans them off enough to get them free. Usually if you have a hanging valve you will get a misfire code for that cylinder/s. If you are hearing a squeeky type noise along with the hanging valve you will be wasting your time trying to clean them most likely it would need the valve job.

I do not have a misfire or squeeky noise, just the loud ticking noise, especially on a cold day. I have tried cleaning it by flushing the engine oil, went away for a while and came back again.

The loud ticking does it go away after a few min after start up or stays the entire time?? Does it sound like an exhaust leak or a knocking noise??? If it knocks for a few seconds after start up it could just be a normal noise that I have heard for years on a lot of Land Rovers and Range Rovers. The only way to take care of it if it is knocking coming from the lower end of the engine is to replace it. Unless you know a good cheap mechanic that can rebuild the engine or fix the problem area it will be cheaper to replace the entire short block with a new short block, a rebuilt short block or a used engine. Hope this has helped you. angelo@redroversuv.com

I have a 99 disco. that had a recent oil pressure sensor leak that i fixed without a hitch. But my bigger problems came afterwards when i received trouble codes p1316, p0300, p0340. After talking with the dealer they suggested that i change plugs and wires and that should fix my problems. It didn't...I did check the fault codes again and it dropped the p0340 code. Upon start up I have NO power whatsoever...Wont go above 1200 or so rpm! Once it warms up it will drive fine...Is there a cold start injector? I also ran some injector cleaner but haven't ran the whole tank of gas through yet. I suspect similar stuck valve problems but whats with the loss of power upon start up?
