I am thinking of getting a 95' Discovery from my in-laws that has >200,000 miles on it. It leaks like the Exxon Valdez but is currently road worthy and driven regularly. The previous owner was the original owner and had all the maintenance records, etc when they bought it several years ago. I want a reliable, comfortable all terrain truck for daily driving and trips up north (snow, mud, etc). I want the opinion of those who are familiar with the Disco's if getting this truck and then performing a major overhaul would be worth the trouble. Specific questions I have are: 1. Are there rebuild kits for the Disco engine or is a replacement the only option? From what I have seen the cost of a salvage engine is $2000-$3000. What would a rebuild cost and what parts involved? 2. With this many miles I figure the suspension, brakes, etc should also get a complete overhaul. Any advice on the cost, parts involved, what should be replaced, etc? My last question is general....the feedback I get locally are that the Disco's are "junk", etc. However, searching the web I hear over and over how rugged the Rover's are. Opinions?:-) Thanks for any feedback. I want a reliable 4x4 that I can count on for years to come and perform most repairs on myself and thought this might be a good pick if the cost to bring it up to par isn't too prohibitive.
