One of the more common areas for fluid leaks is the power steering system. In rare instances it is simply the hose from the fluid reservoir to the Steering Box. More often it is a combination of the other two hoses and/or the seals in the bottom of the Box itself. The fluid will saturate the Panhard Rod Bushings and cause them to fail in proper lateral location of the front differential.--usually felt as a "vagueness" in road feel that gets worse over time.

Land Rover issued a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) to address steering "shimmy". The root cause is Panhard Rod and Radius Arm bushings that need to be replaced. This eliminates the free-play in the front axle housings-lateral location.

The steering system requires sound tie-rod ends to maintain the correct tracking ability on and off road. Check yours with a pair of Channel Locks--one jaw on the nut--the other on the top of the rod body. Squeeze-- and look for "compressibility". You'll know when they are not long for this world. When re-newing these parts, don't be alarmed in not being able to remove them from the drag-link. Frequently-- this also has to be replaced as the tie-rods are frozen from corrosion and won't budge. You won't be able to do a proper front-end alignment without this adjustability.

/i//tn_Steering_Box.jpg The Steering Box is available as a re-manufactured item here at eurotek apg. It has been our experience that the shaft re-seal kits only work some of the time. This is due to movement of the shaft caused by worn shafts/bearings, and the re-seal attempt will fail soon after you have gone through the whole messy exercise. It is also strongly recommended that you replace the hoses, and the Panhard Rod Bushings which disintegrate from oil saturation-when fitting another Steering Box.

Another cause of vagueness in the steering can be traced to swivel-pin housings out of adjustment and/or impending failure of the front CV joint- Hub bearings. Check for play with the front wheels elevated and grasping the tire/wheel at the 6 and 12 o'clock position. Try to rock it. Again-- a little movement is okay. Check your service manual for further instruction.
